Frequently Asked Questions
Who invented the World Wide Web?
Sir Timothy John "Tim" Berners-Lee, KBE, FRS, FREng, FRSA, a British computer scientist in the summer of 1991. He was knighted in 2004.
How long does it take to design a website?
This will depend upon the complexity of the website you wish and also the current workload which we have. Once a website has been started it can take from a couple of days to several weeks! An eCommerce site with 10,000 products will be very time consuming!
What if I don’t understand what you are doing for me?
We have a test server where you can view the progress of our design for you. If you have any questions or do not understand any part of the process you will be able to contact us by email, telephone or in writing at any stage during the design process and we will be happy to explain anything you are unsure of.
What happens if I need to make changes to my website?
You may decide to leave any changes to your website to us. We will always prioritise our workload to make sure that our existing clients’ changes are made to their websites as soon as is practicably possible. Alternatively, you can opt to have your website designed with a ‘Content Management System’ included in it. This will allow you to make changes to selected parts of your website without breaking the main website. We can give you training on how to do this.
What do you charge?
The subject of website design can be very complex, and therefore, depending on the complexity of the work involved which we do for you, we will charge you a fair price for the work that we do for you. We will always discuss our charges with you first so there will be no ‘nasty’ surprises.
Do you guarantee your work?
In so far as we will not expect you to pay the final instalment of your invoice until you are completely satisfied with your website. There is nothing that can ‘go wrong’ with website design after it has been delivered. When a website fails to work correctly, it is usually due to the hosting company or problems with internet connections, it is rarely the fault of the website design.
Do I have to pay up front?
We may charge a percentage of the agreed price with the order. This is to cover our third party costs (such as registering a domain or SSL certificate on your behalf), but we will not expect you to pay the final balance of your invoice until you are completely satisfied with your website.
How do I know what is happening during the design period?
We have a ‘test’ server at www.minting.biz where you will be able to view the work in progress. This is how we will keep in touch with you about your design. After the design has been approved by you it will be moved onto a server where it can be browsed by using your own domain name.
Can my website be designed for Accessibility?
Yes. Accessibility is now a legal requirement for large corporate companies. The subject of accessibility is vast and covers many different aspects. We build our websites with basic accessibility included in them. To provide a fully accessible website is a complex matter and it will depend upon the website involved. You will see that if you change the text size in your browser (view>text size - in IE6) then our text will change and all of our images have alternate text (when you hover over the image). This is an example of basic accessibility.
I’m not very computer literate – will you be able to give me training to enable me to use my website fully?
Yes, training can be provided by ourselves or by accredited trainers. For the Actinic eCommerce shopping cart software this can be direct with Actinic. For most ‘brochure’ style websites there is little to do after the design process has been completed, but again, don’t worry – we are here to help.
