Email and Website Hosting

If you use your own domain name, you will need a website and email hosting service. To simplify matters, here are a few basic definitions:

Website: a collection of files which are all linked together and are stored on a server.

Email: electronic mail, is a single file which is sent to a server and is then collected by the recipient.

Server: a powerful computer. A server stores files for websites and emails which it delivers (or serves - hence its name) on demand to your computer via the internet.

Internet: a vast worldwide network of servers.

Broadband: a fast connection service to the internet .

To explain this further, let’s use the BBC as an example.

What happens when I type www.bbc.co.uk into my computer?

Your computer connects to a local server via the internet using broadband and requests the BBC website files. The local server will know the whereabouts in the world of the server which the BBC is using, and retrieves the website files for you. Your computer then displays the BBC website. This all happens in a second or two.

What happens when I send an email to the BBC?

Your computer connects to a local server via the internet using broadband. The local server will know the whereabouts in the world of the server which the BBC is using and sends your email to the server for storage. When the BBC connects to its server and retrieves its emails then your email will be delivered to them.

Where are these servers?

Servers are located in a data centre which is a secure and temperature controlled building and is protected from interruptions like power cuts or surges. These servers will also be protected from deliberate attack by hackers and viruses. Files on servers are backed-up so that in the event of a disaster, your website and email files can still be retrieved. There can be duplicate servers located in different countries in the world for security.

What is the difference between www.YourCompany.co.uk and John@YourCompany.co.uk ?

The www. in front of your domain name will let the server know that it should find the stored website files.
The @. in front of your domain name will let the server know that it should find or store the email files.

What is MintingMail?
