Why is website photography important?

The days of point and shoot photography are long gone. To be competitive it is essential that your website has well-balanced clear images. The best way to achieve this is by using professional photographic equipment and services.

Why do photographs for websites need special treatment?

There are a variety of reasons why photographs need to be optimised for website use, but here are a few of the more important ones:

  • Colour balance
  • File size optimisation
  • Copyright information
  • Special effects

What is colour balance?

Photographs printed on paper use a mixture of four ink colours. This process is known as CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). Computer screens use a mixture of light in three colours known as RGB (red, green and blue). Images for websites have to be colour balanced so that when they are displayed on a computer screen they look natural and inviting.

What is file size optimisation?

Photographs for websites must be optimised to allow fast downloads. Today most web surfers in the United Kingdom have the benefit of fast 8Mb+ broadband speed. When using photographs for your website, you should consider that there are slower dialup modems still in use. Mobile users with internet access on portable devices like BlackBerry , Apple iPhone or Apple iPad will also have slower connection speeds in saturated areas too. By optimising a file size a fine balance is drawn between a fast download time and picture quality.

What copyright information is needed for photographs?

In order that your photographs cannot be used by anyone else without your permission it is important to include some copyright information. This can be achieved in several ways, one being to super-impose a watermark onto the photograph, another is to include a digital signature in the photograph itself.

What are special effects?

Photographs can be altered in all sorts of ways. One example would be to change a colour photograph into black and white, to tint it sepia and then add distress marks. Your 2010 photograph of your favourite pet now looks like it was taken in 1910.
