How to Improve Search Engine Optimisation
How can I improve my Website's Search Engine Optimisation?
There are three main areas to consider:
- SEO you can do by yourself
- SEO that you can do with your website designer's help
- SEO only your website designer can do
SEO you can do by yourself
Get your business listed in
Google Local Search. By being listed in local search results it can increase visitors to your website –
this is often because most people prefer to buy locally or use a local service.
Get involved in social media. We’ve all heard about Twitter,
Facebook and blogging.Twitter is an on-line website where people can
publish short text-like messages or comments which are known as ‘tweets’. Facebook is another on-line social network where friends can exchange personal information and pictures.
A blog is simply a web log i.e. a written on-line journal which is regularly updated. By getting listed in Google Local Search and by using social media correctly -
will provide your website with good quality links.
If you decide to choose a blog, then also consider that the best option is to integrate the blog into your own website, although your website designer will have to do this. This retains all of the text
within the website for the spiders to search. Our Blogs and Social Media page has more information.
SEO that you can do with your website designer's help
You can provide your website designer with a list of relevant links which you would like to be included on your website.
Ask him to include these links within the body of your text and
in the correct context. Once this has been done, you can then contact the websites that you have linked to and request a back-link.
Links to and from your website are important because they will increase your PageRank. If your website has decent and informative content other people will naturally want to link to it.
All links are useful but good quality back-links are especially important.
Good content will always attract good quality links so use ethical link techniques - beware of anyone asking for payment to link to you - you SHOULD NEVER
have to pay for links to your website!
You can provide your website designer with well written text ready for your website. The text content of your website is very important,
it should always be written for people first
and then for the search engine spiders. Good copywriting is the art of creating a flow of words that puts across your message to your target audience and which will hold your reader’s
attention by giving useful information about your products or services whilst also appealing to those hungry little spiders! Use plain English and real
sentences when writing text for your website so that it’s easy to read.
Adding content that is related to the main theme of your website will make it more relevant.
The best way to do this is to continually add new content pages, and blogs based on the main theme. The more quality content you have on your website - the better your listing will be.
You should include well chosen keywords which can be a combination of words or phrases which best describe what your website is all about.
It is extremely important to determine which words and phrases are important to your website as finding the right keywords is the key to successful SEO.
Keywords are an important part of SEO and there are several tools on the web available to help with this, however a company specialising in ETHICAL SEO will have the knowledge
and skill to fully interpret and utilise these keywords.
SEO only your website designer can do
A well-built and designed website with good quality code which complies with W3C standards will give your website the best possible chance of climbing the search engine results pages.
Make sure that you choose a competent and professional website designer, as he is the person who puts together the code for your website and who will ensure that
it complies with the W3C standards.
Many of the DIY template websites available do not comply with any standards at all. Having purchased a template website you then have to learn how to build it after which the images have to
be added at the right size (for fast download) before the website can be launched. Many template websites do not include any search engine optimisation features.
A professionally built bespoke website will always be the best option. Why learn about HTML, CSS, Javascript, Jquery, Flash, PHP, correct page titles, correct meta tags, sitemaps
and a host of other things when you could be getting on with what you know best – your business.
